Let’s phiz it, getting pregnant is not always as easy as it sounds. As many
stories as you have heard about unplanned pregnancies, getting pregnant should

Fertility charting involves taking your temperature at the same time every
morning before getting out of bed. You also observe for signs of ovulation and
table your cervical mucous pattern. Charting can help determine if you are ovulating
and help you to pinpoint when ovulation is occurring.

3. Use ovulation intimation kits (OPKs)

You can buy ovulation prediction kits at your local pharmacy or you can find
them even cheaper if you purchase them online. A day or two before you ovulate,
your fullness produces a surge of luteinizing hormone, LH. OPKs work by detecting
this LH surge. Follow the directions that succeed with your kit to determine how
to read the test strips, what time of day to test, and also what day of your
cycle you should begin testing. OPKs cannot sustain ovulation, but they can
help you predict ovulation before it occurs. Used in combination with fertility
charting, they are very effective in determining ovulation.

your fertility such as thyroid disorders and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
Even infections and viral illnesses can precipitate problems getting pregnant. Your
doctor can work with you to come up with a plan for you to get pregnant.

A Madison County man has filed suit against an Alton dental practice, alleging the dentists did not properly diagnose him with TMJ and performed a procedure that made his bite worse.

Gene Silveus claims he visited Humbert Road Dentistry on March 16, 2007, where dentists grinded down the teeth and crowns of the left side of his jaw, causing him to have an uneven and unbalanced bite.

In the suit filed March 6 in Madison County Circuit Court, Silveus claims Dr. Terry Ortman and Dr. Timothy Pranger improperly worked on his mouth, causing him to suffer acute and prolonged physical and mental pain and suffering.

They also failed to initially diagnose Silveus’ TMJ and bi-lateral click before they grinded on his teeth, the complaint says.

The two dentists failed to render dental services consistent with Silveus’ needs, failed to adequately evaluate his condition, failed to diagnose and treat him, failed to take a proper history before grinding on his teeth and failed to fully explain the procedure to him, the suit states.

“After assuming the care and treatment of plaintff, Gene Silveus, the defendant, Dr. Timothey Pranger, D.M.D., through his authorized agent, employee or partner, co-defendant Terry Ortman, D.D.S., committed battery against the plaintiff by intentionally grinding down his teeth and crowns on the left side of his jaw without plaintiff’s consent,” the suit states.

Silveus claims they also failed to properly equilibrate the left and right side of his teeth on the same day.

As a result, Silveus has incurred dental expenses, according to the complaint.

In the 13-count suit, Silveus is seeking a judgment in excess of $650,000, plus costs.

He is represented by Jeffrey A. Kopis of the Kopis Law Office in Belleville.

The benefit to advertisers and marketers is obvious, but it’s hard to see users really caring enough to forfeit some privacy just so they can help out advertisers.

But web browsing is just the tip of the iceberg: lots of marketers are looking at how to take information generated by mobile phones to hit users with targeted ads. They’re not talking about the worn-out Starbucks example of hitting people’s phones with a coupon when they walk past a store, but building profiles of people based on their travel patterns, favorite applications and web sites, and even gender, age and income information. Again, all of this info given up for the sake of seeing “better” or “more interesting” advertising. That really doesn’t benefit the user, so why should they give up — or be forced to give up — all of this information?

When I was just starting 6th grade I got my first job. Paperboy! Boy, was I excited. At that time I had spent a lot of time actually playing the video game Paperboy, so I knew I had what it took to get the job done. But, its just not that easy.

The StarTribune doesn’t just hand out the responsibility of informing their community’s citizenry on a daily basis to just any fool that says they’d like a shot at paper delivery greatness. Nope, I had to interview for this job. And I tell you, I was magnificent, so much so that, as you know, I got the position. Upon completion of the interview the gentleman that was to give me my first opportunity at financial freedom stood up from my dining room table, walked to the front door and with a smile and a handshake, was off into the darkness.

Moments later, I noticed that the kindly gentleman had accidentally left his pen. It was beautiful, embossed with the StarTribune logo and all. I grabbed it and ran to the front door, but he was gone. It was at that moment that I received my first lesson in advertising specialties.

Consumer watchdog fails

IRISH BANKS have lost 90 per cent of their value and the Financial Regulator has seen its chief executive retire early, yet the watchdog monitoring them has not met for more than five months, it has emerged.

The last meeting of the consumer consultative panel of the Financial Regulator was held on September 9th, 2008, the Department of Finance has confirmed. That committee’s term expired in mid-October and it took more than three months before Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan appointed a new panel last month.

The delay in appointing a new panel, and the failure to consult consumer interests during the financial crisis, has angered some members.

“It was noticeable during the crisis that industry had the ear of the Department of Finance and the regulator but consumers were nowhere to be seen,” one told The Irish Times.

He said many of the issues raised by the panel had “crystallised” in the current crisis. “We told them they had to prepare for a downturn, we criticised the speed at which they operated and we expressed opposition to a ‘tick box’ approach to fitness and probity in financial institutions.”

The regulator has so far failed to publish the latest report by the panel on its performance; in previous years, these have been highly critical of aspects of its operations.

The author of the report, panel member and finance lecturer John Maher, said he wished it had been published some time ago but he understood the regulator must first make a formal response. This could not happen until a new panel was appointed and had met.

Mr Lenihan has now appointed 11 members, from a possible 20, and says he will consider further appointments later. He has also increased the term of membership from two years to three.

Membership, which includes representatives of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland, St Vincent de Paul and Immigrant Council of Ireland, is broadly similar to the previous panel and consumer lawyer Raymond O’Rourke has been re-appointed as chairman.

A separate industry panel has also not met for more than five months. It also took more than three months to appoint 20 members to this panel, which will be chaired by David Went, chairman of The Irish Times Ltd and former chief executive of Irish Life and Permanent.

The statutory function of the consumer panel is to monitor the performance of the regulator and to provide the regulator with comments on the performance of the financial services industry.

Its first chairman, Brendan Burgess, resigned in 2007 after tensions arose with the regulator. The panel’s 2006 review criticised the slow response of the regulator to consumer issues, saying it “communicates with such caution that it gives the impression that if it can find a reason not to act, this will be the preferred outcome”.

It also complained that the panel, and by extension consumers generally, have no information on enforcement activity.

Seven Layer Salad Recipe

This delicious seven layer salad recipe is a must have for all occasions! Ingredients:
* 6 cups chopped lettuce
* salt and pepper
* 6 hard-cooked eggs, sliced
* 2 cups frozen peas, thawed
* 8 to 16 ounces bacon, crisp-cooked, drained, and crumbled
* 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded mild Cheddar cheese (or cheese of your choice)
* 1 cup mayonnaise (or miracle whip)
* 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar
* 1/4 cup sliced green onion with tops
* paprikaPlace 3 cups of lettuce in the bottom of a large bowl and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Layer hard boiled egg slices over the lettuce and sprinkle some more salt and pepper on top. Layer the rest of the ingredients in the following order:
* Peas
* remaining lettuce
* crumbled bacon
* shredded cheese
Remember to sprinkle more salt and pepper in between layers. Next, combine mayonnaise and suger. Spread this mixture over top, making sure to cover the entire salad. Cover the bowl with alluminum foil and chill 24 hours or overnight. Garnish with green onions and a little paprika. Toss before serving.

This salad serves about 12 to 15 people.

Let’s have a look at a controlled calorie low carb diet. Watching calories, and reducing the number of carbs in your eating plan, is one way to watch your weight. If our objective is to lose weight, cut out all starches, breads, rice, potatoes, corn, etc and include large quantities of fresh vegetables and fruits.

Try and get your protein from organic, grange fed chicken, eggs, eating fish high in nutrients, like tilapia and North Atlantic salmon. Even better use legumes, lintels and small quantities of nuts and seeds or butters made from them. Sprouted grain breads and roles are good choices. They have great nutritional value, gives you something to bite into that will satisfy those cravings but will provide long lasting satisfaction.

A good controlled calorie low carb diet means eating less junk and making sure that every calorie that we eat has ample nutrition in it. Avoid the so called “empty” calories at all cost!

Desirable Ferraris have usually been considered less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the world’s financial markets than most other marques, but car collectors kept their hands firmly in their pockets at last weekend’s Bonhams sale of Ferraris and associated memorabilia in Gstaad.

Many of the star lots failed to reach their estimates and were consequently not sold, although most of the more affordable lots found buyers. Even then, they struggled to achieve the lower end of their estimated prices.

The annual ‘Ferrari et les Prestigieuses Italiennes’ auction at Gstaad featured a host of not only desirable but seminal Ferraris for sale, most notably a 1955 121LM Spyder Corsa that competed in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours and that year’s Mille Miglia road race in the hands of Phil Hill, Eugenio Castellotti, Umberto Maglioli and Carroll Shelby. It was estimated at £2,808,450 to £3,945,000 but the price for one of the most collectible competition Ferraris to emerge on the open market for many years was apparently too steep as buyers responded to current financial woes with extreme caution.

An immaculate, 192 F40 also failed to sell, as did the 1951 212 Export Spider that came third overall in the 1951 Mille Miglia.

A 1967 275GTB/4, estimated at £717,000 to £836,000, had reached only £595,000 before the hammer fell.

The Ferrari ‘Daytona’ (proper name the 365GTB/4) coupe has been fetching high prices but one of the examples at Gstaad, one of only 530 Series 1 cars and estimated at £232,800 to £268,600, failed to sell.

Health Eating Guide with WHO Food Pyramid

The World Health Organization advocates the Food Pyramid as a simple guide to healthy eating.

Components of Healthy Diet

The base of the pyramid is the “carbohydrate” component. Thus rice, pasta and cereal products should make up the bulk of our food intake. The next tier consists of “protein” products like meat, seafood and soy. Proteins should comprise a proportionately smaller component of our diets than the carbohydrates. The smallest contribution should be from the “fat” group as this is linked to the development bof obesity and heart disease. Vitamins and minerals are trace elements that are found in varying quantities in the various food substances.

More recently, healthy eating advisors advocate the minimum daily consumption of two pieces of fruit and two portions of vegetables. This is to ensure the intake of fiber is adequate for the regulation of bowel movements.

Reducing Fat Intake

Although meat products are primarily made of protein, the choice of cut can markedly affect the fat content. We can choose to reduce our fat intake by choosing lean cuts of meat and ctting off all visible fat prior to consumption. With poultry, the breast meat tends to have less fat than the thigh meat. However, the removal of the skin and visible fat allows us to continue to enjoy the thigh meat. Such small actions can have a drastic effect on our total fat intake and long-term health.

Use the Right Cooking Technique

In the same way, the way we cook the food also has marked effects on the eventual fat content. The use of deep-frying or shallow-frying techniques markedly increases the fat and calorie content compared to grilling or steaming.

I advocate the use of stir-frying with non-stick equipment (particularly frying pans and woks) and the use of minimal amounts of cooking oil.

Generally, 1 teaspoon of cooking oil is enough for each dish. Compare this with the numerous cookbooks that advocate the use of large amounts of oil to marinade the meat (to prevent sticking), followed by stir-frying with large volumes of oil or even deep-frying the meat before stir-frying!

Merkel holds anti-crisis summit

BERLIN - GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel, under fire over her reaction to the financial crisis, called together business leaders, ministers and experts on Sunday to discuss ways of escaping the international recession.

‘No concrete measure was decided,’ Economy Minister Michael Glos said after the six-hour meeting finished.

The goal of the meeting had been to reflect on possible measures, he added, with the government aiming to decide on specific actions by the end of January.

Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck said everything would be done to avoid job losses.

The time had come for ‘us to take joint responsibility, as the government cannot handle the economic situation alone’, Ms Merkel told a press conference before the meeting.

Ms Merkel has made defending German jobs a top priority but increasing numbers have been lost in Europe’s biggest economy in recent weeks.

The criticism of the government has particularly hurt as Ms Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) prepare for a legislative election in 2009. The CDU is in a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD).

German economic experts and officials have said her 31 billion euro (40 billion dollar) economic stimulus is not enough.

Other European Union members have also pressured for Merkel to spend more.

Quoting government sources, the weekly Wirtschaftswoche reported the government is preparing a second 30-billion-euro economic plan that will include investment and fiscal incentives.

The package is not expected to be announced until the end of January, giving Merkel time to prepare an anti-crisis strategy within the government, the weekly said.

Ms Merkel is to meet state and local government leaders this week.

Der Spiegel magazine said in its latest edition that the government now expects the economy to shrink by two per cent in 2009. The official government forecast is for a fall of up to one per cent. — AFP

New Nokia Smartphone Patent Features Swiveling Widescreen and QWERTY

A new patent from Nokia shows a pretty interesting new design: a full widescreen that can swivel behind a QWERTY keyboard so only half the screen is visible.

When held in one position, the phone looks a lot like Nokia’s traditional QWERTY candybars, but the screen can swivel up and out to present a widescreen, presumably for media or web browsing, apps that need a lot of screen real estate. It’s a cool way to combine the appeal of a giant touchscreen with the utility of a QWERTY keyboard, except unlike sliders like the T-Mobile G1 or the Sidekick, the keys are always available on this concept. The screen can also apparently rotate side to side, though I’m not really sure what use could be had from that.

It’s just a patent, and I’m sure there are a number of reasons why this idea won’t come to fruition (how is that screen attached?). But I like the idea and maybe we’ll see elements of it in future products from Nokia.

Front yard decorations get more elaborate for WVC couple

A West Valley man does not need many hands to make light work — he has two to make 18,000 of them light up his front yard.

Dan Nelson has made and bought Christmas decorations for about eight years, and he is planning to expand his collection.

“Every year, I just want it to be brighter,” Nelson said. “I have more lights in my shed — in boxes that I don’t take out — than most people put up.”

“I think he’s obsessed, but I think it’s a good obsession,” said Jewel Nelson, his wife.

Dan Nelson, an architect, became fond of making Christmas decorations after a friend had asked Nelson to help with his. Ironically, the friend lived on Christmas Street.

Nelson got hooked.

“People go on vacations, and I buy Christmas lights,” he said.

In his front yard, Nelson has 10 ?plywood angels representing his granddaughters and 11 gingerbread boys representing grandsons. Each of them has a name written on it, and its eyes are painted, respective to the grandchild it represents.

Nelson said he made 21 reindeer for his friends and family members during the second year.

Among other decorations are reindeer and moose, three wise men and a nativity scene, a snowman, two soldier boys and pine trees, all decked out in lights and connected to 10 outlets. Onlookers can also hear Christmas songs in the background.

Nelson said he started getting his house into a festive mood the week before Halloween. He has since spent every weekend adding decorations.

Although the rest of Bluebird Drive doesn’t shine as brightly as the Nelsons’ home, neighbors don’t seem to mind. One of the neighbors, Randy Garcia, let Dan Nelson use a corner of his yard to set up some moose and pine trees.

“We’re actually waiting for Dan to expand all the way over,” Garcia said.

Nelson’s lights shine from 5 to 10 p.m. every night and help Rocky Mountain Power survive the country’s economic crisis.

“I don’t look at [the electricity bill],” Dan Nelson said. “We’re on a year-round [billing plan], and it goes up every year. I probably wouldn’t do this if I looked at it.”

He said that he’s trying to buy more LED lights, which run cooler and therefore save energy.

“It’s not like we’re saving anything because he keeps adding more stuff,” Jewel Nelson said.

Analyst: Apple could sell a million iPhone gift cards

Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has been checking with his contacts in Apple’s (AAPL) supply and distribution channels and reports that demand for the iPhone is “fairly healthy” in the U.S., Europe and, with the exception of Japan, most of Asia Pacific. He’s anticipating sales of 6 million units for the December quarter (Apple’s fiscal 2009 Q1), down from 6.9 million in Q4 but in line with the Street’s expectations of between 5 and 7 million.

But that significantly understates actual demand for the iPhone, Wu says, because it doesn’t include the wild card in this holiday season’s iPhone sales: the iPhone gift card.

“We think there is strong reception of AAPL’s new iPhone 3G Gift Card program,” Wu wrote in a report to clients Wednesday, “where the process of giving the iPhone as a gift is greatly simplified without the need for activation and personal information. … We estimate several hundred thousand to one million units could be impacted.”

The good news about these gift cards is that Apple gets to collect the revenue up front, which improves cash flow. The bad news for Apple’s Q1 earnings is that it can’t recognize the sale of an iPhone until the customer activates it. “The risk here is that the customer will likely activate post-Christmas,” writes Wu. “Therefore revenue and units won’t likely be recognized until the March quarter.”

In a separate note issued Tuesday, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster took a stab at estimating how many iPhones Wal-Mart (WMT) is likely to sell when it, as reported, begins carrying the devices three days after Christmas. Bottom line: Apple could sell as many iPhones through Wal-Mart in 2009 as it sells through its own Apple Stores.

Vodafone and Western Union to Partner on Money Transfers

Vodafone has joined forces with Western Union on an international mobile money transfer pilot; residents in the U.K. town of Reading will be able to send money to the mobile phones of relatives and friends in Kenya.

Money transfers has already become a success in Kenya via the M-PESA (”M” for “mobile” and “Pesa,” the Swahili word for “money”) system, which, for example, can be used by someone in an urban area to forward money to relatives in rural areas, and people in rural areas can pay off a loan in an urban area.

The service is marketed by Safaricom, in which Vodafone holds a stake, and there are currently around 4 million M-PESA customers, and that number is growing by approximately 200,000 users a month, according to Caroline Dewing, a spokeswoman at Vodafone.

“What we are doing is extending M-PESA internationally, and we are partnering with Western Union to do this, because they have such a huge foot print in terms of stores and knowledge in the space of international remittances,” Dewing said.

A person who wants to transfer money will be able to go into a Western Union store in Reading and say that they want to transfer some money to a Safaricom cell phone in Kenya. For the receiver in Kenya it will work just like any M-PESA transfer.

“They’ll get a text message saying you have been given X amount of money, and they can then choose how to store that: money on the phone, send it on to someone else or go to an M-PESA agent and cash it,” Dewing said.

Convenience and the ability to send smaller amounts for a low fee are the two major benefits compared to traditional money transfers. Sending up to £100 costs £4.90 (US$7.35), and £100 to £200 is £6.90, according to Dewing.

The trial will be conducted for three to four months. During those Vodafone will test all elements of the service and also see if the fee structure works, according to Dewing.

The goal is to roll it out between the U.K and Kenya, and then on to other markets within the near future, said Dewing, who declined to be more specific.

Using the mobile for either money transfers or as an electronic wallet is getting a lot of attention from the financial and telecom sectors.

Western Union is, for example, already working with Orascom Telecom, Globe Telecom and SMART Communications.

The 12 days of Christmas plants — poinsettias

This is the second in our series on how to buy and care for the most common holiday plants. Once upon a time, this Mexican native was such a finicky plant that it rarely last much beyond the end of December, if that long.

Boy, have things changed! Now it’s not at all unusual for a poinsettia to look good all the way till Easter.

If that hasn’t been your experience, here’s what you need to know:

In the store, when you’re choosing the plant, look for deep green leaves all the way to the base. Move the foil back at the bottom of the foliage to see if any leaves have turned yellow from lack of light.

If you want the freshest plant available — one, typically, that should last longer because you’re going to give it better care at your home than it received in a big-box store — look at the tiny little yellow buttonlike flowers in the middle of the colored bracts.

If they’re closed or barely open, the plant is very fresh. If they’re missing (having already fallen off), it’s been around a while. See if you can find another.

OK, let’s stop a second here for those of who might be confused by the word “bracts” and who think those little yellow things in the center of all that red couldn’t possibly be the flowers of the plant. If you know all this stuff, skip the next paragraph.

Once you’ve picked the poinsettia you want, make sure that the store gently wraps it up if temperatures are 50 degrees F. (10 C ) or lower. On a cold day, you’ll want to take the plant right home, not leave it in the car while you do the rest of your holiday shopping. Poinsettias don’t respond well to shivery weather.

The first thing to do after you have the plant back home is remove the foil wrapping. It blocks light from reaching the lower leaves and encourages root rot because water collects in the bottom.

Better to put the plant into a cachepot if you want something decorative. There, you can see if there’s standing water in the bottom that you need to pour off.

If you can’t bring yourself to do that, at the very least move the foil back from the base of the plant and poke good-sized holes in the bottom so water can drain out. (Then put the plant n a saucer, of course.)

Place the plant where it will receive at least six hours of bright light daily but not touch a cold windowpane. I know, I know. You bought the plant as a decoration, and it should be on the coffee table or the fireplace mantel, not a windowsill.

But give it light during the day — to keep it happy and looking good — then move it to wherever you like in the evening.

German Stocks Drop; Hypo Real Estate, Continental, E.ON Fall

Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) — Germany’s DAX Index declined for the first time in three days as interest-rate cuts by European policy makers failed to ease concern the region’s economy will deteriorate further.

Hypo Real Estate Holding AG and Continental AG dropped at least 2 percent after Deutsche Boerse AG said the companies’ shares will be removed from the benchmark index this month. E.ON AG and RWE AG, Germany’s biggest utilities, retreated as power for next-year delivery slid to a 15-month low.

The DAX Index slipped 0.1 percent to 4,564.23 after gaining as much as 3.6 percent earlier. DAX futures expiring this month retreated 1.6 percent as of 6:07 p.m. in Frankfurt. The broader HDAX Index added less than 0.1 percent.

Germany’s DAX Index is down 43 percent this year as almost $1 trillion in credit-related losses and writedowns at financial firms worldwide push the economy toward a recession, damping the outlook for earnings.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the euro region’s economy will shrink next year for the first time since 1993 after the bank delivered the biggest interest-rate cut in its 10-year history, reducing borrowing costs by 75 basis points to 2.5 percent.

The ECB’s decision came after the Bank of England today lowered its key rate by one percentage point to 2 percent and Sweden’s central bank cut borrowing costs by the most since 1992.

Hypo Real Estate lost 7.1 percent to 2.89 euros, the biggest drop in two weeks. The property lender will be replaced by Salzgitter AG in the DAX on Dec. 22. Salzgitter, Germany’s second-largest steelmaker, climbed 4.2 percent to 51.42 euros.

Continental, Utilities

Continental lost 2.4 percent to 35.82 euros. Europe’s second-biggest car-parts maker that’s being acquired by Schaeffler Group will be replaced by Beiersdorf AG, which slipped 0.7 percent to 43.42 euros today. The maker of Nivea skin creams aims to expand more quickly than the market next year, Chief Executive Officer Thomas Quaas said today.

E.ON, Germany’s biggest utility, lost 1.9 percent to 24.98 euros. RWE, the second-largest, sank 2.3 percent to 61.80 euros.

Electricity for next year in Germany, Europe’s biggest power market, slid to the lowest since Aug. 28, 2007, on expectation demand for power will weaken as economic growth in Europe stalls.

Consumer confidence could hurt new-car sales in final quarter of fiscal year

Bargain-priced “slightly used” cars will become a hot commodity in Canada as price-conscious buyers scoop them up and U.S. car dealers — armed with a stronger currency — prowl the Canadian market for deals.

That’s the prediction from Canadian car-pricing expert Paul Timeoto, who expects a falling dollar to stir the interest of U.S. dealers in Canadian vehicles.

“The prospect of U.S. dealers coming up here to buy is looming very strongly now,” said Timeoto, president of online car-pricing-data firm CarCostCanada.com. “The dollar has only been below 90 cents US for a few weeks so it may take a little while for them to pay attention to our market. But it won’t take long.”

He noted that until recently, Canadian car dealers took advantage of a strong Canadian dollar to buy used cars — less than one year old — in the U.S. and resell them in Canada.

“Dealers went down there and literally brought them back by the truckload and Canadians saved a lot of money that way,” Timeoto said. “But that situation has dried up now and the reverse is likely to happen.”

New vehicle sales in Canada during the first three quarters this year appeared to be heading for a solid year of about 1.6 million sales, but declining consumer confidence in the final quarter could push that figure down.

Statistics Canada said 14,900 new vehicles were sold in B.C. in September, a 10.8-per-cent decline from the same month last year.

Dueck Downtown general manager Greg Keith said used cars are popular with many buyers, but almost everyone wants the newest technology possible because fuel efficiency is such an important factor.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a person to buy a three-year-old car, especially with gas prices the way they are now,” he said. “I drive a new Escalade hybrid full-size vehicle that gets better fuel economy than a lot of mid-sized cars.”

StatsCan said new-vehicle prices in Canada are at their most affordable level now in more than 15 years, measured as a percentage of disposable income. It takes about 19 weeks of disposable income for a typical Canadian household to buy a new car, down from a peak of 25 weeks a decade ago.

But for travelers still planning to visit Grandma’s for Thanksgiving or spend Christmas weekend in Paris, the news isn’t all bad. There are still deals to be found, provided you shop carefully and plan ahead. Check out our 10 tips for holiday travel and find some joy this holiday season.

Avoid peak travel dates
At Thanksgiving, Wednesday is the critical outbound “avoid” day as a rule. Traveling on Thanksgiving day proper is often a breeze and more affordable; there are often cut-rate airfare deals on Thanksgiving day.

On the return, Friday morning isn’t bad at all, with each successive day getting a little busier, more difficult and more expensive through Sunday evening. The bottom line: If you are looking for a deal, you won’t find one on the peak travel days. Travel off-peak whenever possible.

South African President Mbeki to quit

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) — South African President Thabo Mbeki agreed Saturday to resign, clearing the way for his longtime political rival, Jacob Zuma, to run for the office next spring.
Mbeki has been South African president since 1999.Mbeki plans to meet with his Cabinet on Sunday to discuss his decision, and some Cabinet members might leave in a show of solidarity.

The president made no public comments, and it was unclear when his resignation would take effect.

Gwede Mantashe, secretary-general of the African National Congress, announced at a news conference earlier in the day in Johannesburg that the party — which Mbeki has been involved with since his teens — had asked him to leave before his term was up.

Mantashe said the ANC made the decision “for the citizens of South Africa, so there could be stability within the country” and so the ANC movement could remain “stable and unified.”

“The reaction of President Mbeki to the news, in my own view, was normal. He didn’t display shock or any depression. The party’s request to Mbeki came after a judge on September 12 threw out the corruption, fraud and racketeering case against Zuma, calling it invalid and accusing Mbeki’s government of political interference in the case.

The case against Zuma, who is ANC president, was thrown out in September 2006, but the National Prosecuting Authority recharged him. Judge Chris Nicholson made no ruling on Zuma’s guilt or innocence, and he could be recharged.

Political observers doubted that would happen because of Zuma’s popularity with the Communist Party and trade unions.

Zuma has denied the charges. He said the case was politically motivated, and harmed his chances to become the ANC’s presidential nominee.

Zuma had been facing at least 15 years in jail if convicted of accepting bribes from a company that got a contract in a multibillion-dollar arms deal.

He also faced charges of having a corrupt relationship with his former financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, who is serving a 15-year sentence for soliciting bribes for Zuma and using Zuma’s political influence to benefit his businesses.

Mbeki, 66, succeeded Nelson Mandela as president in June 1999. Critics of Mbeki alleged he pushed for the corruption charges against Zuma.

On Monday, Zimbabwe’s political rivals put aside the violent past and signed a power-sharing deal intended to end the crisis that has paralyzed the country since the disputed national elections in March.

Google T-Mobile USA said today that it would unveil the much-anticipated mobile phone loaded with Google’s Android software next Tuesday at a press conference in New York. The “G1,” which is being manufactured by HTC, won’t go on sale until October. But expect T-Mobile to finally divulge some key details such as pricing.

T-Mobile is just the first carrier to market the phone. Other cellphone manufacturers and carriers are expected to dial for dollars using the Google brand as bait, but they apparently have hit some snags. The Android phone is being positioned as a rival to Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry.

For Google, this seems like a no-lose proposition. The Internet search giant wants to make sure that all of its services, including its lucrative advertising, are available on all cellphones. So it created software for mobile phones that does that.

Pundits have been saying for years that the mobile Web will dwarf the non-mobile Web once enough people have access to so-called smartphones and all of the bells and whistles that come with them. Already Google is readying a store for downloadable mobile software similar to the one that has proven so successful for the iPhone.

Google showed off the handset at a developer conference in London this morning.

Ingredients:

1 Chicken Leg or Breast
1 tsp Light Soy Sauce
Dash of Pepper
Dash of Sesame Oil
300ml Chicken Stock
1 tin Cream Style Corn (about 400g)
1 Tbsp Light Soy Sauce
1 Egg, beaten
2 tsp Cornflour mixed with 2 Tbsp Water

Method:

Remove the skin & fat from the chicken. Cut into thin strips.
Marinade chicken with the seasoning ingredients*.
Heat up chicken stock and creamed corn in a large pot. Add 1 Tbsp light soy sauce.
When hot, add in beaten egg and stir gently, so the egg cooks in strands.
Add cornflour mixture to thicken.
Divide the soup into individual bowls.
Heat up non-stick frying pan. Stir-fry chicken strips until cooked.
Scatter a few strips of chicken over the surface of each bowl of soup.

Sadly I remember the hoopla over the PCjr. Back in absolutely anything IBM did was cause for hoopla. It can be hard to remember that now but in the early s in the tech industry IBM s power was like Microsoft and Google combined. Anyway the PCjr was IBM s sad attempt to jump into the just developing home computing market. Never mind that nowhere in all of IBM s history did the company actually sell anything into the home market a fact that all but guaranteed it would have no idea how to do so. IBM forged ahead thinking that the way to make a computer for the home was to make a bad computer and charge less for it. Didn t really work out well. By mid IBM pull! ed the PCjr from the market. Debbe Geiger has never been one for tattoos. But when her daughter Kim begged to get a henna tattoo on a family vacation to Cancun a few years ago she thought it couldn t hurt. After all it s only temporary and Kim would have something to show off to her friends back home. But just two days later the tattoo of a cute little bug had swelled into an itchy bubbling blister on Kim s upper right arm. I was scared to death says Geiger who s and lives with her family in Cary N.C. I thought she s years old and she s going to be scarred for life. The American Academy of Dermatology recently issued a warning that a chemical found in black henna tattoos can cause a severe allergic reaction causing the skin to redden swell and blister but only where the henna is applied leaving people with bubbly blisters in shapes like suns stars and flowers. As henna body art has become mainstream in the last few years often peddled at summer carnivals and concerts dermatologists report increasingly t! reating patients especially teen girls and young women with these often elaborate looking allergic reactions. Just because they re temporary people think they re safe says Dr. Sharon E. Jacob a dermatologist at the University of California San Diego. Natural henna vs. black henna While true henna is made from harmless plants black henna uses a chemical called para phenylenediamine or PPD which makes the tattoo dry quickly and last longer and in some cases that s much much longer. These skin allergies themselves are not dangerous says Dr. Colby Evans a dermatologist in private practice in Austin Texas. But they can cause scarring or darkness to the skin that can be permanent. Despite the potential for creating a permanent souvenir from that trip to Mexico the scarring generally will go away on its own within a few weeks. But it s almost always odd looking. This week the New England Journal of Medicine published Evans account of a particularly intense case A year old Kuwaiti ! woman Evans treated after she returned from a wedding where she had black henna applied to her forearms hands and fingers. A week later her swirly flowery henna was overwritten with a swirly flowery blister. Last year Evans also treated a young man with a similar allergic reaction to henna that took an even more bizarre form a blister on the back of his neck in the perfect shape of an eagle. In both cases Evans prescribed steroid creams to bring the swelling down. Lifelong allergies to some medications But Evans and other dermatologists warn that just one bad reaction to black henna can be enough to cause permanent sensitivity to PPD and that allergy can cross react with chemical relatives in certain anesthetics and medications for heart disease hypertension and diabetes. The allergy you can develop is lifelong says Jacob. But she s found that people especially teens are generally unimpressed by her warnings of reactions to medication so she reserves this for the kicker It may mean you can never dye your hair again. While PPD is used in most h! air dyes allergic reactions aren t very common because it isn t applied directly to the skin and in black henna the concentration of PPD is times higher Jacob estimates. But a PPD sensitivity could cause an allergic reaction after even the slightest contact with the chemical. Kim Geiger s blister faded away within a month and her mom says she hasn t had any allergic reaction to medication since. But Debbe Geiger often wonders how anyone could ever tell the difference between safe natural henna and black henna. This was a little booth set up at the hotel pool and I didn t think anything of it she says. Experts say there are a few easy ways to tell the difference between true henna and black henna. For one henna is never black it s red which darkens to a brownish color on the skin as it dries. Real henna starts to fade away within a few days so be wary of a henna tattoo artist who boasts of tattoos that will last any longer than that. But both mom and daughter Geiger aren t t! aking any more chances they re staying far away from all things henna. It looks so harmless Debbe Geiger says but you have to watch these ingredients they re using. The set that McMurtry and his band played unapologetically skewered the current political state while celebrating grieving and even joking about the! struggles and triumphs of the working class citizen. McMurtry himself cuts the appearance of the American Everyman scruffy beard unkempt hair baseball cap beer soaked polo shirt which adds even more authenticity to the heft of his songs and lyrics. Backing McMurtry was bassist backup vocalist Ronnie Johnson drummer Daren Hess and lead guitarist Tim Holt who appeared on stage after a one song solo acoustic set by McMurtry. It appeared as if the band s main job was to lay the groundwork onto which McMurtry could build his narrative edifice tear it down and move onto the next song unabashedly never looking back. What made this effective was McMurtry s use of a different guitar for almost every song which changed the texture and flavor of a given song s thematic content. Following particularly solemn songs about war and injustices McMurtry reverted to the elixir of comedy. One particularly poignant moment came while McMurtry played an electric string mandolin guitar hybrid while singing the lyrics Tomorrow morning I ll be sober and you ll be just! as ugly. Mark Royden Winchell RIP

I was saddened to learn that occasional TAC contributor Mark Royden Winchell died last Thursday. Winchell is perhaps best known for his studies of Southern literary figures such as Donald Davidson and Cleanth Brooks though he was also the author of a highly regarded volume about William F. Buckley Jr. ISI had just brought out his latest book God Man and Hollywood last month. A posthumous work The Cause of Us All Cultural Politics and the South is forthcoming. He had been a professor of English literature at Clemson University since . He was an impressive scholar and by all accounts a true representative of the Southern gentlemanly ideal. Take Yahoo s most recent technical failure called Panama. This advertising platform was supposed to match up search results with appropriate advertising. There s nothing in Panama that I would want to integrate with our offering a senior Microsoft executive told me last week. A federal court on Wednesday established a formula for determining the Internet royalties owed to thousands of music composers writers and publishers by three major online services Yahoo AOL and RealNetworks. The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers hailed the decision estimating the guidelines could yield as much as million in payments covering a seven year period ending in . The trade group known as ASCAP had contended that its members weren t being properly compensated for musical works that helped drive traffic and increase revenue for Yahoo Time Warner s AOL and RealNetworks. Wednesday s ruling issued by a federal judge in New York doesn t affect the royalties owed to record companies. A representative for the Digital Media Association a trade group representing the Internet services declined to comment on the ruling late Wednesday. U.S. District Judge William Conner s page decision didn t specify the total amount owed to the ASCAP members but he provide! d an example on how the formula would apply to the music royalties owed by AOL and Yahoo for . Under the formula endorsed by Conner AOL owed fees of . million and Yahoo owed . million. That s far more than AOL and Yahoo envisioned. New York based AOL had proposed paying just in royalties while Sunnyvale based Yahoo had proposed paying in licensing fees according to court documents. Conner s estimates were slightly less than what ASCAP had sought from the Internet services. The group wanted . million from AOL and . million from Yahoo to cover the royalties according to court documents. Yahoo must pay royalties dating back to while AOL must cover fees going back to . RealNetworks unpaid bill goes back to . The amount for each year will vary widely depending on the amount of music streamed over their Internet services and the usage of their sites. It s become standard practice for the defeatists in the Democratic Party to discount the war reports before they ve even been given . So with General Petreaus scheduled to testify next week before Congress on progress or lack thereof in Iraq Nancy Peloser is already warning him not to put a shine on recent events in the country. I find it interesting how they cherry pick what they want to believe from Iraq s top general. During last September s testimony Gen. Petreaus testified that political progress in Iraq was lacking. Immediately the defeatist appeasers jumped all over that little tidbit of information and ignored everything else in the testimony. Moveon.org even went so far as to air ads saying Petraeus is a traitor and bastardizing his name! by calling him General Betray Us . You ll remember the Senate voted to condemn the ad except for Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Hussein Obama . They don t want to hear good news. I hope we don t hear any glorification of what happened in Basra said Pelosi referring to a recent military offensive against Shiite militants in the city led by the Iraqi government and supported by U.S. forces. By the way what happened in Basra is that US and Iraqi forces SHUT DOWN the Sadr militia and forced him to again retreat defeated. When are we just going to put a bullet through this man s forehead Interestingly the Democrats don t want to be reminded of the success in Basra and instead focus on Al Sadr s successes in create havoc in the city. Doesn t anyone else see this I will be traveling to DC on Monday ahead of Gen. Petraeus to speak with my Congressmen and ask them to listen to his report with an open mind and remember that they are listening to an honorable man speak hone! stly about what he sees on a daily basis in Iraq. Petraeus has been in Iraq longer than he s been home the past five years He s spent more time in Iraq the past five years than she s spent in DC.
