Everyone thinks they know what the term business casual means button downs and khakis check but some of us clearly could use a refresher course. Consider this reader question I work in the administrative offices of an industrial company. The dress code is business casual but that turns into jeans and product sponsored polo shirts or even product sponsored T shirts and sweatshirts. Our CEO vice president and heads of HR and accounting all dress in that manner. When I showed up in slacks heels and a sweater my first day I got looked at as though I were from Mars. I would like to dress u! p a little more for work but anything too far from the jeans and polo look would make me stick out like a sore thumb. Any suggestions My immediate suggestions center on the other members of your office. Sweatshirts are for watching Law Order marathons or downing the contents of a bucket of KFC both worthy pursuits in their own right but you get the point. They re not for an office. Since your CEO isn t the one writing in though I ll focus on you. Frankly your first day outfit doesn t strike me as overkill it s not as though you showed up to the a.m. meeting in a fur cape or even a suit. In a sense you re asking the impossible You want to fit in with your sweatshirt wearing brethren without you know wearing a sweatshirt. I can t go for that. No can do. You must accept that you re going to stand out a little it s not such a bad thing. Here are some thoughts on doing so stylishly. Trade your stuffy slacks for more casual wide leg pants. You don t want to look sloppy but this i! s when breezy not overly pressed fabrics can be your friend. I love the look of the Gap s delicately weathered khakis. With a collared shirt and unbuttoned sweater the combination is pulled together but not prim. The pastel plaid and rolled up sleeves do a lot to dress down the look while the unified palette does just as much to add polish. If you d rather stick with slacks make them denim like Ann Taylor Loft s. Finish with a tidy tee and flats rather than heels. As for the model s chic little trench That s not for the sweat shirt crew. Hang it in the office coat room during the day. Then slip it on when you leave work finally able and no doubt ready to greet the regular well dressed world. The following are comments from the readers. Atrocious Episode
British soldiers accused of executing civilians I heard the terrible sound of someone being choked Claim UK troops executed Iraqis Mr Abdelreza s statement said I believed people were being killed. I have never heard anything like that sound ever before in my life. It shocked me and filled me with such terror. The lawyers say the five witnesses are labourers from Majar al Kabir with absolutely nothing to do with the insurgent Mehdi army who engaged British troops at the Battle of Danny Boy. Showing images of corpses from the battle Mr Day said The nature of a number of the injuries of the Iraqis would seem to us to be highly unusual in a battlefield. For example quite how so many of the Iraqis sustained single gunshots to the head and from seemingly at close quarter how did two of them end with their eyes gouged out how did one have his penis cut off and some have torture wounds There is the clearest evidence available of systematic abuse and systematic failings at the very ! highest levels of politicians the civil service and the military said Mr Shiner. Mr Day was previously involved in legal action launched against the MoD over allegations by more than Masai women in Kenya that they were raped by British soldiers in the s. What a wonderful world. The lawsuit filed in Davidson County Circuit Court on Monday alleges three anonymous defendants libeled Don and Terry Swartz on a blog! titled Stop Swartz. The blog levies several accusations against the Swartzes including details in an October post linking the couple to fires set throughout their neighborhood Old Hickory Village last year. President of the New York based Media Bloggers Association Robert Cox says the lawsuit would be difficult to win because of free speech protection under the First Amendment so the couple would have to prove the postings are malicious and likely show damages. The site is hosted by Blogger which is owned Google. A spokesman for Google did not return an e mail seeking comment. More details as they develop online and in Thursday s News Sentinel. Lost is a thoughtful analysis of American culture values By Beth Pratt A j Religion Editor Saturday February Story last! updated at am An all consuming pursuit of power position and wealth not only doesn t satisfy but is destructive says Dennis McDaniel. Counting the real cost of what the world terms success McDaniel marshals his argument from observations made during years as an attorney in Washington D.C. as well as his biblical expertise in a book titled Lost in the American Dream The Costs False Promises and Spiritual Realities of Living the American Dream. The book is a thoughtful analysis of how Christian values are affected by the culture of success. He names rampant consumerism the villain that has corrupted the church as well as society in general and is now beginning to permeate India and China posing an even more serious threat to depletion of the Earth s resources because of the huge populations of those areas. When I became a Christian I expected to see significant differences in the way Christians perceived things and lived he writes in his introduction. But I saw that many if ! not most were caught up in the familiar American Dream themes wanting the extravagant purchase to earn the extra buck to get ahead to be successful to get in on that once in a lifetime investment opportunity. I noticed when I would raise this topic people would sit up in their chair when I mention this hole we try to fill up with things but that doesn t go away. He draws on examples and observations of how the single minded pursuit of success eventually cost some of his former colleagues their lives. The book a quick read gives a Christian perspective on the temptations of falling prey to worldly standards of materialism. God exposes our culture s show me the money mantra as a delusive philosophy of a fallen world communicated to us from its fallen angel Satan who can only be expected to miscast our purpose in life as having nothing to do with God he writes. McDaniel a retired attorney who lives in Wolfforth first served as assistant city attorney in Washington and then as an appellate and legislative attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor.! In addition he has taught Bible classes for years in Maryland churches and in Lubbock. I left Washington because I wanted to get away from D.C. and retire some place exactly the opposite of Washington McDaniel said. For about seven years he would come to the Lubbock area on vacation to enjoy the wide open spaces and decided in it was time to move out here. It s been a breath of fresh air he says even after a couple of days with the sand blowing. I ll take a dust storm to that drenching humidity any day. People are the friendliest here I ve met anywhere in my life. His book soon should be on its way to local bookstores he said but it can be ordered now at Amazon.com . The cost for the page paperback is . . He has two book signings coming up the first will be p.m. March at Hastings on University Avenue the second p.m. March at Hastings Books in Plainview. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had identified three cases two in Miami and one in Memphis Tennessee in which a child was infected in this way between and . The mother was involved in two of the cases and a relative who acte! d as a caregiver was involved in the third. In developing countries some mothers pre chew food for babies. These women may lack access to packaged baby food or may not have a way to blend baby food. This practice is thought to be very rare in the United States or other wealthy nations. The researchers who presented their findings at a scientific meeting in Boston said the infected women s saliva itself did not transmit the virus to the child but rather it appears blood present in the saliva caused the infection. The researchers said HIV transmission appears to have occurred when the children ingested pre chewed food that contained blood from the bleeding gums of HIV infected women and this entered the children s bloodstreams through a cut sore or inflammation of the mouth or digestive tract. They said they ruled out other possible means of infection such as breast feeding or blood transfusion. Pre mastication is a newly recognized route for HIV transmission that warrants fu! rther investigation in order to continue reducing cases of HIV transmission in the U.S. the CDC said in a summary of the findings by epidemiologist Dr. Ken Dominguez and other researchers. The findings could have more significant implications for developing countries the CDC added. Continued.
